Why Getting Involved in Organized Dentistry Matters

Dr. Stanley Chin reflects on how organized dentistry creates connection, purpose, and meaningful impact for dentists and the communities they serve.
As dentists, we dedicate ourselves to caring for our patients, improving oral health, and serving our communities. One of the most effective ways to strengthen our profession and help shape its future is through involvement in organized dentistry.

As the current president of the Southern Alameda County Dental Society, I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand the impact that organized dentistry has on our profession and our communities. SACDS has provided opportunities to collaborate with passionate colleagues, contribute to important initiatives, and gain a broader understanding of the issues affecting dentistry today.

In future blog posts, we will share many of the specific benefits of organized dentistry—from advocacy and leadership development to continuing education, networking, and mentorship. There are countless reasons why membership and participation matter.

For me, however, the greatest benefit has always been the people.

Organized dentistry has become my professional family. It is a community of individuals who share common goals: advancing our profession, supporting one another, improving patient care, and ensuring a strong future for dentistry. The relationships I have built through organized dentistry have enriched my career in ways I never anticipated. Many of my closest professional friendships, mentors, and colleagues have come from this involvement.

Leadership within organized dentistry has also taught me that meaningful progress happens when members choose to participate. Organizations thrive when dentists contribute their ideas, perspectives, and talents. Whether through attending meetings, serving on committees, participating in advocacy efforts, or pursuing leadership opportunities, every member has something valuable to offer.

I encourage every dentist to consider becoming more involved. Not only will you help strengthen our profession, but you may also discover the same sense of connection, purpose, and camaraderie that has made organized dentistry such an important part of my career.

The future of dentistry depends on engaged members who are willing to share their voices and talents. I hope you'll join us in shaping that future together.
