s represent approximately 15% of the world's population\,\n making them th
e world's largest minority group. \; \;Although the American \nDen
tal Association (ADA) guarantees equal access to oral healthcare\, \nthat
access is disproportionately reduced for people with IDD\, making it\n one
of the more significant problems that they face. Oral healthcare is\n an
important component of maintaining one's overall health and \nwell-being\,
so increasing awareness of this issue and inviting patients \nwith IDD in
to your practice is absolutely critical. \; \; \;Treating pati
ents \nwith IDD is not as challenging as many providers fear\, and the ADA
's \nPrinciples of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct states that \n“
dentists shall not refuse to accept patients or deny service to \npatients
because of the patients …disability.”
Many\n disabled patients
have trouble finding quality dental care because some\n dentists are hesit
ant to treat them. \;These members of the IDD community\n are eager to

Allen Wong\, DDS\, EdD is currently the Dental Departmen t Head at Kramer Davis Health Center in Nashville\, TN. https://kd.health/
He\n is a Professor Emeritus in Diagnostic Sciences and Director o f the \nAdvanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD)/ Hospital Dentistry \nProgram at the Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco.
He\n has taught postdoctoral residents and predoctoral students for over 35 \n years and dedicated his career in improving health equity to those with \n special health care needs in his office\, the dental clinic and hospital.\ n His main emphasis is improving overall health through education and \npr evention in a multidisciplinary approach. Lectures nationally and \nintern ationally with contributions in over 40 journal articles and 6 \nbook chap ters.
Dr. \nWong received his DDS from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. \nDugoni School of Dentistry\, completed his AEGD residency fro m his alma \nmater and received his EdD from the Benerd School of Educatio n\, \nStockton.
He is \nGlobal Clinical Advisor for Special Olympics Special Smiles program\, \nPresident\, American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry \n(AADMD)\, International Association of Dental Ora l Health (iADH)’s \nInternational Advisory Committee and Education Committ ee member\, San \nFrancisco Dental Society Dental Health Committee Chair a nd California \nDental Association Foundation\, Secretary.
Dr.\n Won g is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists\, International \nColleg e of Dentists\, Pierre Fauchard Academy\, Academy Dentistry \nInternationa l\, American Association of Hospital Dentists and a Diplomate\n of the Ame rican Board of Special Care Dentistry.
